I going to run an ultra marathon. It's like a marathon but longer, hence the ultra part. This crazy idea came to me last winter while I was admiring the stitches that were holding my knee together. It was one of those crazy days that I learned a very important lesson the hard way: NEVER daydream while running a chainsaw. It is amazing how fast a spinning chain can jump from a tree limb and into that meaty part right above a guy's knee cap.
The amazing part was that I was okay. As the good doctor cleaned and sewed me up she was amazed at how little damage there was. If there was a good way to cut into yourself with a chainsaw I had done it. She actually wrote "superficial chainsaw injury" on my paper work. I was very fortunate, some might even say blessed.
I began to take stock of my many injuries; chainsaw to the knee, hatchet in thigh, chunk of metal through my shin, and those are just on my legs. Somehow through all those injuries I have made out with little more that just scars and great stories. I really have been blessed. In spite of all the abuse I have put this 31 year old body through, it's in one piece.
I am so grateful to even be walking upright and there is no way that I can continue to waste this blessing of good health. The goal is to complete a hundred mile race in the next 24 months and to raise an awful lot of cash for a nonprofit that is near and dear to my heart. As I make contact with the nonprofit and set things in motion on that end I will be revealing who they are and what they do.
Training officially began on April 1st 2010. I thought that day would be appropriate for so many reasons.
I invite you to follow along as I embark on this endeavor. My hope is that you will be encouraged and get a good laugh in once in awhile. It is also my hope to survive this with all my bits and pieces intact.
Until next time.......

Don't be silly no one, and I mean no one should have to run that far unless they are being chased by something.
ReplyDeleteI think this goes along perfectly with all of the crazy stories filed under "Marshall Burgtorf" in my head! ...I know an almost-official non-profit that would love your fundraiser - ;-)
ReplyDeleteafree....that would be a good training program. maybe I should hire some local kids to chase me with pitchforks and torches. :)
ReplyDeleteAlexis, mmm very interesting. How's that going anyways?
I've been doing a bunch of research on the non-profit paperwork stuff. Now its time to fill it out & send it in...then wait for the official Thumbs up from the government. Did you go through all of that stuff for your film stuff? Any advice would be great!
ReplyDeleteWow, Marshall, I am so impressed. I mostly agree with afree that no one should run that far unless being chased by something (and preferably something that could eat them), but if anyone can do it, you can! We'll be cheering for you from the couch. Or the chair. Or maybe even in bed. Thinking about that much running makes me tired. :)
